Living With Cancer
Some understanding and strength was garnered from a pamphlet titled "Living With Cancer." I thought it was worth sharing and could maybe help someone else. It contains the following statements:
WHAT IS CANCER?
Cancer is a reality many must face BUT a diagnosis of cancer does not mean the end of living.
HOW TO LIVE WITH CANCER:
Expect some problems. Living with cancer will be easier if everyone involved: UNDERSTANDS the effects of cancer and treatment, and DISCUSSES concerns openly.
EXPECT EMOTIONAL UPSETS:
Denial, Anger, Fear, Resentment, Anxiety, Depression and Guilt -- Emotions are strongest during periods of great stress. Learning to accept life with cancer requires openness.
OPEN COMMUNICATION.
This is crucial at all times with physician(s) and medical staff, each other, friends and employer.
MEDICAL TREATMENT IS VITAL.
We must consider treatment, diet, exercise, rest, relaxation and perhaps physical limitations. Be wary of "miracle cures." They are costly and unproven, may raise false hopes, and will only waste precious time.
SIDE EFFECTS OF TREATMENT.
Knowing what to expect may reduce anxieties. Ask for information on radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery which also has "side effects."
HELP IS AVAILABLE.
If you have questions regarding finances, practical problems, rehabilitation, emotional difficulties and/or care at home -- contact -- hospital social services department, nurses, your physician, local cancer clinic personnel, public health agencies, The American Cancer Society or call The Cancer Information Service (1-800-4- CANCER).
A POSITIVE OUTLOOK CAN CONTRIBUTE TO RECOVERY.
Maintain a positive attitude. Make each day count. Stay active. Develop inner peace. Remember more effective treatments for cancer are constantly being developed and scientists are working hard to find cures!
FAMILY AND FRIENDS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO RECOVERY, TOO.
Courage can be strengthened through -- support, reassurance, respect and sharing.
